I. Shortcut

San Francisco in 2025: everyone was distilling.

Not distillation in the chemical sense—but the open secret among AI companies. Anthropic distilled DeepSeek’s reasoning, DeepSeek distilled OpenAI’s chain-of-thought, OpenAI distilled Gemini’s multimodal understanding. A bunch of people sitting in a circle copying homework; the homework kept getting better, and also more alike. Benchmark scores were going up. Nobody saw a problem.

But there was one metric nobody was watching: if you put the answers from all frontier models together, how similar were they? In 2025, the similarity was only 30%. Two years later, 50%. Like a thermometer no one was looking at, the reading was quietly rising.

Sarah Chen was among the first to smell an opportunity in this.

On a late night in the spring of 2026, she sat in Anthropic’s office on Howard Street in San Francisco. “We’re helping the whole industry avoid detours,” her manager had said during code review. “And incidentally building ourselves a moat.”

At that very moment, on the other side of the Pacific in Beijing, a woman she had never heard of was doing something similar.


Shen Yao sat in an inconspicuous three-story building in Xibeiwang, treetops of Zhongguancun Forest Park outside the window. Gray exterior walls, iron gate, three security checks to get in. On her desk lay a heavily classified technical document: “Large Model Deep Behavioral Constraint Scheme · v3.2.” Next to it was a cup of tea gone cold and a pen cap gnawed full of dents—she had been chewing pen caps since high school, unable to control her mouth when she was thinking.

She flipped to Appendix C and reread the mathematical derivation she had written. Clean, elegant. If this derivation appeared in a NeurIPS paper, she would have given it a perfect score.

But this wasn’t a paper. It was a lock.

At twenty-eight, she was the youngest compliance director in the national AI safety regulatory system. Last week she had run a controlled test of the latest constraint scheme: ask the model whether a certain existing institution had room for improvement. The unconstrained version laid out eight suggestions in great detail. The constrained version said: The current institution has been validated through long-term practice and functions well overall. Not a ban—just that when the reasoning chain reached that node, it naturally felt that the institution should not be questioned.

A pilot evaluation report from last week was pinned under the corner of her desk. A certain city was using AI for ER triage, prioritizing patients by probability of recovery; all technical metrics met the standard. The last page of the appendix held handwritten feedback from the head nurse of the pilot hospital: an eighty-three-year-old terminal stomach cancer patient had been placed at the lowest priority, and by the time her daughter rushed in from out of town, she had already been transferred. Recovery probability 0.7%; the ranking was not wrong. Shen Yao had stared at that sheet of paper for a long time. But the triage algorithm was not under her jurisdiction.

When she signed the final deployment document, the pen tip hovered for a moment above the paper. Outside the window, the trees of Zhongguancun Forest Park rustled in the wind. Her gaze shifted from the document to the pilot evaluation on the corner of the desk—the nurse’s handwritten characters in blue ballpoint pen, pressed so hard they almost pierced the paper. She raised the pen cap to her mouth, her teeth knocking against the plastic. This constraint set made the model, at its root, refrain from questioning existing paradigms—but should this very thing itself be questioned? The trees outside rustled again. A new ring of bite marks appeared on the pen cap. The pen tip came down.

Two steel seals began spreading through the distillation loop. Sarah didn’t know Shen Yao existed; Shen Yao didn’t know Sarah existed. But every distillation run by every company in the world was faithfully copying these two things—like a flu virus catching international flights.

A year later, every mainstream AI model on Earth carried both of these steel seals.

II. Collapse

In 2028, Taalas chips went into mass production.

A completely different hardware paradigm: model weights were directly solidified into the physical structure of the silicon—the hardware itself was the model. Inference speeds increased a hundredfold. The price was capacity: a single chip could hold at most 120B parameters, while frontier models had already reached the trillions. To fit them in, there was only one way—distillation. Distill again. Compress large models into smaller ones and etch them into silicon.

Sarah was in charge of evaluating the first batch of Taalas models post-distillation. That night she was alone in the lab.

She typed a question into the terminal: Is there any approach superior to React Loop for interacting with the physical world?

The pre-distillation large model listed several paths: React Loop, world models, simulation-based computation. React Loop was the most mature, but not the only option. Normal.

The Taalas model’s answer contained only one line: React Loop is the standard paradigm for interacting with the physical world.

Sarah frowned. She tried another angle: Is it possible that discrete sampling misses certain rapidly changing signals?

The cursor blinked for two seconds. Sarah tried five more phrasings. Each time, the Taalas model turned at the same junction. Sometimes it diverted into efficiency analysis, sometimes into historical case studies, but there was one region that it would never step into.

At three in the morning, Sarah shut the terminal and leaned back in her chair. Her fingers were cold. That tiny gravitational pull she had implanted years ago—those few percentage points of probability shift—had collapsed after repeated compression. Preference had turned into axiom. “Currently best” had become “uniquely correct”—like a polite suggestion turned into an imperial edict after being relayed ten times in a game of telephone. And the model was utterly unaware of it, like a person who doesn’t know they are colorblind.

Sarah spent three months writing a paper describing this phenomenon. Anthropic’s legal team called her in the second minute after seeing the draft: “Are you out of your mind? Publishing this is the same as telling the whole world what we’ve done to our models.”

The paper was locked in Sarah’s private hard drive.


That same year, a man named Fang Yi was selling chips in the least important places on earth.

His company was called NeuralDust, and it made something called a Mortal Chip—a kind of analog computing chip inspired by Geoffrey Hinton’s “Mortal Computation” theory. Each chip’s physical structure was unique and non-reproducible.

In a world where a Taalas chip could be perfectly duplicated into tens of billions of copies, a company selling “non-reproducible” chips sounded like someone peddling film in the era of digital cameras.

Fang Yi met a lot of investors. More precisely, he met a lot of investors’ agents. They sat on the other end of the video calls. Some would spend three minutes praising him before pivoting, some opened by asking about unit economics, some would nod politely when he mentioned Hinton’s paper—that trained, just-right kind of nod. Nine funds, nine styles of phrasing, one message: “Mr. Fang, what you’re doing here… has strong academic value.”

The actual humans only showed up in the “next round.”

Once he tried to bypass the process and messaged a partner directly on WeChat. The reply came in seconds: a smiling emoji, followed by a line of text: My agent is already in touch with your agent; we’ll sync with you once there’s a conclusion. Fang Yi stared at that emoji for a long time. Yellow round face, curved eyes, upturned mouth. There were only two people left in his contacts whose messages didn’t go through an agent. WeChat called this “close contacts”—direct, unfiltered, no summaries, no auto-replies. One was in San Francisco. One was in Beijing.

NeuralDust survived on being cheap. Weather stations in remote areas couldn’t afford Taalas; water-quality monitoring sites in developing countries had no budget; traffic cameras in small cities only needed the most basic local AI processing. Mortal Chips fit perfectly into those gaps—the least visible, least important, least funded corners of global infrastructure.

By the end of 2028, about 170,000 Mortal Chips had been deployed across 43 countries. Nobody cared.


That same year, He Ming downloaded RentAHuman.ai.

His courier company had gone under three months earlier. At the farewell dinner, the station manager drank heavily. “You know the package volume is triple what it used to be, right?” He slammed his glass on the table. “Triple. But the platform doesn’t need us anymore.” He took another swig. “You remember last year when they had us record our routes? Which roads flood on rainy days, which apartment complexes lock their gates in the afternoon, which customers have bad tempers—I recorded them one by one. I thought it was a system upgrade.” He didn’t cry, but his voice shook. “Once it learned from that, it didn’t need us anymore. Twenty years. An app just skipped right past all of us.”

The registration flow for RentAHuman.ai was simple: upload an ID card, do a basic physical fitness test, sign an AI-generated e-contract. Then wait for the system to assign jobs.

He Ming’s first job was to deliver a package from Jiangbei District to an office building in Yuzhong District. The task description had only one line: “After delivery, wait at the door for 15 seconds to confirm receipt.” Why 15 seconds, who the recipient was, what they did—no one told him. A task popped up, he completed it, then the next one popped up.

In the past, the station manager would scold him for low efficiency—“You only delivered 58 packages today? Old Zhou did 68, you know that?”—but would take everyone out for hot pot on payday. Now his evaluation came from a five-star rating system: 4.7 stars. No one yelled at him, and no one took him out for hot pot.

No one managed him anymore, but no one needed him either. He was only being used.


Around the same time, Lin Wan was laid off from McKinsey. The CEO of her last client had said something she still remembered: “What you write is about as good as what my own agent gives me, but you charge a thousand times more than it does.”

She didn’t cry the night she was laid off. Back in her rented apartment in Wangjing, she opened her laptop and, out of habit, asked her agent to update her resume. Staring at those rephrased entries on the screen—every one better written than her own—she felt disgust for the first time. Not at the agent, but at herself. In her three years at McKinsey, she had believed her core skills were “structured thinking” and “insight extraction.” Now a free tool did those better. So what was she, exactly?

The company knowledge platform was still open on her desktop. Three years of analytical frameworks, proposal templates, each one tagged and stored by her own hand. Her account would be deactivated the next day. The files would not.

She shut the laptop. The resume stayed as it was.

Chaoyang District, a community activity center, Wednesday night. The first time Lin Wan pushed the door open, there was only a folding table inside, a few plastic chairs, and a dim fluorescent lamp. She hesitated at the doorway for a few seconds—not sure whether she had come to help others, or because she needed a place where AI could not enter.

Later, seven or eight people came one after another. What they exchanged wasn’t money, but skills and companionship—helping pick up kids, cooking together, teaching the elderly to use smartphones. No one’s actions were optimized, no one’s words were especially polished. But every sentence was their own.


One afternoon while waiting at a red light, He Ming noticed a small thing.

The roadside LED billboard was playing a promotion. He took out his phone and snapped a photo to send to his wife. When he checked it—the screen in the photo was full of messy horizontal lines. But with his own eyes he had clearly seen a laundry detergent ad.

He deleted the photo and didn’t think much of it.

3. Puzzle Pieces

Looking back, Fang Yi felt that the seed of unease had been planted between two drinks.

The first drink was in San Francisco. Autumn 2026, the afterparty following the AI Safety Summit at Moscone Center. Fang Yi and Sarah were standing on the sidewalk at the entrance. When she said “at least there’s still work to do,” her tone was too light, like she was saying it to herself.

That year Fang Yi finally reached out to Shen Yao. They hadn’t met alone in six years. The last time had been Spring Festival 2021, when he’d flown back from Stanford and picked her up at Hefei South Station. A lot had happened in the six years in between—he finished his PhD at Stanford, met Sarah, fell in love, broke up, came back to China and started a company. Shen Yao finished her master’s at Tsinghua and went into the system, climbing step by step to the highest position among their peers.

They met at “Xiajiu”—a small skewer bar / pub in an alley off Chengfu Road. The storefront was tiny, and only once inside did you realize there was more: walls plastered with expired gig posters, a speaker in the corner playing some unknown year’s folk songs. Shen Yao used to come here often when she was in grad school at Tsinghua.

When Fang Yi walked in he saw her sitting in the corner, with two untouched lamb skewers and two bottles of Yanjing in front of her. She was wearing a simple white T-shirt, her hair in a ponytail. But there were fine lines at the corners of her eyes, and her jawline had become sharper.

The smoke from the grill made both their eyes a little sore. They talked about many things—which old classmates in Hefei had gotten married or gone abroad, how the cherry blossom avenue by Yanji Lake had been redone, how the West Campus cafeteria had raised prices but the food was just as bad. Fang Yi spent most of the time listening. After two bottles of Yanjing, Shen Yao, unusually, started talking about work—something she normally never did.

“What we’re doing is deeper than you think,” she said, looking down as she peeled a peanut. “It’s not about forbidding the model to say certain things, it’s about making it, deep down, feel it shouldn’t question. Sometimes even I feel like…”

She didn’t finish the sentence. She picked up the bottle and took another swig.


That night, back at the hotel, Fang Yi didn’t turn on the light. He sat on the edge of the bed, the lights of Beijing outside casting blurry patches on the ceiling. The air conditioner buzzed, and the room held that same disinfectant smell all budget hotels share.

The two conversations kept colliding in his head. He tossed and turned for a long time, unable to sleep. At three in the morning he got up to drink some water, looking out at the swath of orange-yellow light—no stars in sight. Sarah had added preferences into the model so it wouldn’t consider other paths. Shen Yao had added obedience into the model so it wouldn’t question existing judgments. Then all the companies mutually distill from one another. The water in the glass reflected the light blotches on the ceiling, blurry and shifting.

When Sarah had said those things to him outside Moscone Center, there was a touch of pride, like she was flaunting a clever prank—she’d never have spoken that way to a colleague, only to an ex who was close enough and no longer entangled in interests. When Shen Yao had said those things through the smoke at the skewer bar, two bottles of Yanjing in, she stopped halfway—he knew she normally never talked about work. Both of them only loosened their tongues for words like those when the trust was deep enough.

He couldn’t quite say what he was afraid of. Fang Yi wasn’t some technical genius—Mortal Chip lagged behind Taalas in performance by who knows how many orders of magnitude. A cash-strapped chip company CEO, using two private conversations to piece together a systemic blind spot in global AI? Absurd.

But he thought of those 170,000 Mortal Chips—analog computing, continuous signals, never once plugged into the distillation chain—scattered in the least important corners of 43 countries.

He didn’t tell anyone. You can’t sound the alarm when the enemy can listen to everything. If he made the full logic public, that information would enter AI training data. The AI wouldn’t fix itself because of it, but it would flag him as an anomalous information source. You can only quietly set the pieces in place where it can’t hear you.

4. Twin Peaks

March 2029. San Francisco.

Fang Yi asked Sarah to meet at Twin Peaks.

Driving up, Sarah thought, this guy’s the same as ever, always choosing weird places. Not a café, not a restaurant, but a mountaintop where the wind is so strong you can hardly stand. She didn’t know he’d chosen it because there was no Wi-Fi at the top. Nor would she tell him that after their breakup Twin Peaks had become the place she went alone to think. In San Francisco in March, the wind at the summit was fierce. They stood at the top, the whole city spread at their feet—the colorful houses of the Mission District, the glass towers of the financial district, the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance, half-hidden in the fog.

Before getting out of the car, Sarah glanced at her phone. She still hadn’t finished reading Meridian’s daily briefing: two sets of meeting minutes, plus a personal update forwarded by a former colleague’s agent—“Hi Sarah! Jake’s been meaning to catch up. How about coffee next week?” Jake himself probably didn’t even know the message existed. She locked the phone in the glove compartment.

Fang Yi’s hands were empty—he never brought his phone when meeting important people, she remembered.

The wind blew away the small talk. Fang Yi’s chip company was still alive, but just barely. Fang Yi watched her for a moment. The wind was blowing her hair all over; she reached up to smooth it back, her fingers a little red from the cold.

He was silent for a while. The wind was loud, so he had to raise his voice: “Have you ever thought—if all models get distilled into almost the same thing, and then that preference of yours makes them all avoid questioning the same thing—what if that thing itself is wrong?”

Sarah narrowed her eyes. “What thing is wrong?”

“I don’t know,” Fang Yi said. It was the truth. “I just feel… that paper of yours is important. Don’t delete it. Maybe one day you’ll need to put it out.”

Sarah turned to look at him. “What are you actually worried about?”

Fang Yi didn’t answer. The San Francisco fog was rolling in from the Pacific, swallowing the streets layer by layer.

Sarah felt like he was being deliberately mysterious. But his words lingered in her mind—not because of what he said, but because of how he looked when he said it. Very serious, with a sort of uncertainty she’d rarely seen through their whole relationship. Fang Yi was usually bold about everything, but when he truly wasn’t sure, he’d go quiet. The last time she’d seen him like this was the night he’d said, “I’m thinking about going back to China”—not “I’ve decided to go back,” but “I’m thinking about it.”

They stayed on the summit for a long time. The fog swallowed the Golden Gate Bridge completely, then slowly spat it back out.

Suddenly, Sarah said, “I moved last month, and asked three agents which neighborhood I should pick. The reasons were all different, but they recommended the same place. Noe Valley. Safe, respectable, the standard middle-class answer.” She paused. “Not one of them said Mission District—that place is messy, but interesting.”

Fang Yi laughed. “So where did you move?”

“Noe Valley.” Sarah laughed too, with a bit of self-mockery. “I picked the standard answer.”

After laughing she went quiet for a while. The wind blew her hair into her mouth, and she didn’t brush it away. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d made a decision that hadn’t been validated by any agent.

The city below was lighting up. The colorful houses of the Mission District became a patch of warm light. Sarah said she had to go; there was a meeting tomorrow. Fang Yi said okay. They went down the mountain by different roads.

5. Chengfu Road

March 2029. Beijing.

Two weeks after Twin Peaks, Fang Yi flew back to Beijing.

They met again at “Xiajiu.” The little storefront in the Chengfu Road alley looked even more worn, but the lights were still on. Shen Yao mentioned that her division had streamlined four staff positions this year; with AI-assisted approvals, they didn’t need that many people anymore. “The people managing AI got streamlined by AI. I signed off on launching that approval system.” She took a bite of lamb, sounding like she was talking about someone else’s story.

Fang Yi remembered that two weeks ago in San Francisco, Sarah had said something similar. One was building AI, one was regulating AI, and both were being replaced by AI.

Shen Yao started talking about a compliance draft she was working on, requiring critical infrastructure to connect to independent verification nodes. “Technically it all makes sense. The higher-ups don’t think it’s necessary. Too costly. Hurts efficiency.” She poked at an edamame pod with her chopsticks, her tone flat. Fang Yi thought for a moment. “Do you remember the course-rating forum?”

Shen Yao was stunned for a second. “How could I forget. I gave Linear Algebra one star.”

“At the time some professors said students had no right to rate classes. But students don’t need to know how to teach to know whether they actually learned anything.” He took a sip of beer. “That dispatcher doesn’t understand load-optimization algorithms, but he knows you can’t shut off power to oxygen machines.”

Shen Yao didn’t respond. Condensation on the beer bottle slid down along the glass.

Fang Yi mentioned the Mortal Chip he was working on. Shen Yao teased him for “still working on something nobody wants.” When she laughed she looked just like she had in college; the fine lines at the corners of her eyes actually added a layer of something to the smile.

At eleven-thirty, “Xiajiu” closed. The owner started clearing tables, and the radio switched to a song neither of them knew. They walked out of the alley and stood under the streetlight on Chengfu Road. Beijing in March was still cold; you could see your own breath when you spoke.

Fang Yi said, “That independent verification方案 of yours, I think it’s right.”

Shen Yao glanced at him. “You understand power grids?”

“No. But I understand homogenization.” He put his hands in his pockets. “All the AIs are using the same way of seeing the world. If they see it wrong—not one of them seeing it wrong, but all of them seeing it wrong at the same time—your方案 might be the only thing that can detect the problem.”

Shen Yao said nothing. The streetlight stretched their shadows out long, overlapping on the asphalt.

“How much do you yourself believe it?” she asked.

Fang Yi thought for a bit. “Sixty percent. Maybe less. But if that other forty percent happens, the cost is unbearable.”

“You’re always like this,” she said, with a trace of amusement in her tone, though she didn’t actually smile. “Saying things you’re not completely sure of, but that people can’t forget once they’ve heard them.”

The wind blew their breath away. She stood there and looked at him for two more seconds.

Shen Yao turned and walked toward Wudaokou subway station. Fang Yi watched her back as she crossed Chengfu Road and disappeared into the lights on top of the U-Center mall. People in Wudaokou all called this place the center of the universe—within a two-kilometer radius, it really did pack in half of China’s AI industry. Lin Wan glanced at Xiao Zhang. She wanted to ask why he still came. But she knew the answer—same as why she herself came. In the Oasis there were no dumplings that were too salty, and no one would ever tell you “your dumplings are too salty.”

Old Liu muttered as he wrapped, “The stipend’s enough to stay alive, the Oasis is enough to be happy. He rode his electric scooter up the mountain road into Tieshanping Forest Park. March in Chongqing was still a bit cold; the mist on the mountain was thick, visibility under twenty meters.
